Do you have a hidden Twitter account? Hackers may have found your information

5.4 million accounts were exposed

A Twitter vulnerability allowed hackers to find usernames associated with certain email addresses and phone numbers. As Twitter confirmed , it fixed the vulnerability in January after a report as part of its bug bounty program, but a hacker managed to exploit it before the patch.

The vulnerability arose from an update to the code in June 2021. Thus, hackers had several months to exploit the problem. According to Bleeping Computer , a hacker collected a database of 5.4 million accounts and tried to sell the information on a hacker forum for $30,000.

After analyzing the data, Twitter confirmed that user data had been compromised. It remains unknown how many users have ultimately been affected by the vulnerability, but Twitter plans to notify those who have fallen victim, although ” it is not possible to confirm every account that may have been affected .”

It recommends that users who are concerned that their secret accounts have been exposed turn on two-factor authentication and use a phone number and email that is not linked to their main account.
