The Color Purple: The remake comes with musical moods – Watch the trailer  

A fresh take on the classic 1985 film

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the trailer for ” The Color Purple “, thus giving a first satisfying look at the new version which is practically a remake of the classic film of the same name from 1985, where then Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey starred. Now, Winfrey is producing the film that made her a household name, alongside Steven Spielberg and music legend Quincy Jones .

Almost 40 years after the remake, Blitz Bazawule ( Black is King ) comes with a musical mood, impressive and majestic artistic direction and scenery and a strong cast with several well-known names. Fantasia Barrino makes her feature film debut in the title role and is joined by: Halle Bailey (The Little Mermaid), Colman Domingo (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Euphoria), Taraji P. Henson (“What Men Want,” “Hidden Figures”), Danielle Brooks (“Peacemaker,” “Orange Is the New Black”), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard,” “If Beale Street Could Talk”), Corey Hawkins(“In the Heights,” “BlacKkKlansman”), and r’n’b singer HER (“Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration”).

The cast is completed by: Louis Gossett Jr, David Alan Grier, Ciara, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, Tamala J. Mann, Stephen Hill, Jon Batiste and Elizabeth Marvel . 

Screenplay by Marcus Gardley (“Maid,” “The Chi”), based on the novel by Alice Walker and the musical, book (of the musical) by Marsha Norman, with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. Behind the camera is photographer Dan Laustsen ( The Shape of Water, John Wick Chapter 4 ). 

The Color Purple will premiere on December 25 in the US and worldwide from January 18, 2024 .
