Elon Musk wants to make the internet on air flights with Starlink

A new way of using satellite internet

If you’ve tried airplane internet services on a long flight, you know that browsing isn’t the most pleasant experience, with slow speeds and frequent disconnections. SpaceX , Elon Musk ‘s well-known aerospace technology company, now aspires to solve this problem .

Moving on to the details, SpaceX has now revealed the first official details of using Starlink in flight. Specifically, the company’s satellite internet promises speeds of up to 350 Mbps inside the plane and will be available worldwide. The only condition for Starlink Aviation – as it will be called – is that the vessel is equipped with the special Aero Terminals and that they have an unobstructed view of the sky. Now SpaceX’s Low Earth Orbit satellite network is of such a scale that it offers internet to every corner of the planet. This means that there will be normal access inside the cabin, even when the boat is over sea or hard to reach places.

In fact, the company promises that users will be able to use the access in any way, having for example the ability to make video calls, play online games or activate their VPN and watch streaming content.

Speaking about it, Elon Musk said:

Internet on airplanes will be the same as if you had Internet access at home!

We even tried video calling an airplane in the air using Starlink to another, very distant airplane, also in the air, that was equipped with Starlink. It worked perfectly with no lag!

SpaceX will start by making Starlink Aviation available for private jets, while soon it plans to work with airlines to integrate it into commercial flights. It’s worth noting that those interested in private jets will have to pay a $5,000 deposit to get in on priority.

The first Starlink Aviation Aero Terminal kits will begin arriving in 2023.
