iPhone 14: Roller Coasters Enable Collision Detection (Audio)

Accidental calls to emergency services

iPhone 14’s new collision detection feature detects when the user has been involved in a traffic accident and alerts emergency services. An unexpected activation of it, however, seems to take place when one is on roller coasters. According to the Wall Street Journal , emergency services have been called to multiple times at amusement parks, only to find that the alleged victim was on the roller coaster.

So it seems that the Crash Detection algorithm takes the sharp turns and sudden braking of the ride as a crash, sending an automated message to the emergency services with the geographic location of the supposed victim. In fact, it also transmits the surrounding sound through a microphone and in this particular case you can hear the screeches of the people on the roller coaster, while the owner of the iPhone 14 had it in his pocket.
