According to the United Nations , the world population will exceed 8 billion by November 15, 2022 ! India is projected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country by 2023.

In a few days we expect the birth of the eighth billionth inhabitant of the Earth. It is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity and marvel at the advances in health that have extended our life spans and dramatically reduced maternal and infant mortality rates. At the same time, it is a reminder of our shared responsibility in caring for the planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our obligations to others. – Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations

The world’s population is at its slowest growth rate since 1950 and has fallen below 1% in 2020. Projections call for 8.5 billion people in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050. It is expected to peak in 2080 with 10.4 billion and it will remain there until 2100.

Today, 2/3 of the population lives in countries with a fertility rate of 2.1 births per woman, which equates to almost zero population growth in the long run in a population with a low death rate.

The populations of 61 countries are expected to decline by 1% between 2022 and 2050. More than half of the projected increase in global population by 2050 will occur in just 8 countries, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania and Congo .

The percentage of people aged 65 and over is expected to increase from 10% in 2022 to 16% in 2050 and will be twice the number of children under 5.

The average human life expectancy was 72.8 years in 2019, an improvement of 9 full years since 1990. In 2050 this number is expected to reach 77.2 years.
