Windows 11 will finally open RAR files by itself

Almost 30 years after the appearance of .rar files

In the midst of the Microsoft Build Developer’s Conference 2023 that the technological giant focused on AI , it made other announcements that also had their importance. .rar files are more or less familiar to everyone who has used a computer and have always been a headache for users, as they needed a third-party program to open them like the legendary WinRAR ( which all asks you to buy a key but always remains free). but also WinZip and 7-Zip as its alternatives.

So one of those announcements is about RAR file support, which is finally coming to Windows 11 . Yes, indeed Microsoft itself makes the aforementioned programs practically unnecessary, as it will support the management of such files natively, that is, through the operating system itself.

In fact, it will not only support .rar files but also all other compression files such as .tar, 7-zip, gz and many more , while it promises to offer “improved functionality” in terms of compression compared to third-party apps that have been around for decades now.

However, Microsoft has not said exactly when it will release the Windows 11 update that will include this feature to everyone. It only said that it will roll out support for zip files in a new work-in-progress build of Windows later this week.

It may have taken Microsoft about 30 years to support said compression files, but as the saying goes “better late than never”.
