1899: How many languages are its protagonists heard to speak?
An unusual choice for the Netflix series that has left viewers wondering
The Netflix series “1899” from ” DARK ” creators Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese continues to sweep, but there are many elements within it that raise questions – beyond its escalating subversive plot.
One of the elements concerns the languages spoken by the protagonists, as it consists of an international cast of actors from different European countries. So how many languages are spoken in 1899? Netflix confirmed in a Twitter post that those who watch it will take…language lessons in: Cantonese, Spanish, Danish, Polish, German, English and French .
The creators consciously chose to have the characters each speak their native language to enhance its international and multicultural element.

The German international co-production includes a rich cast of European actors with several familiar faces from other Netflix series such as “DARK” and “Elite”, each of whom will speak their native language.
