Cryptocurrencies: Accidentally received compensation of $10 million instead of $68

And bought a luxury villa

Crypto.com is a popular cryptocurrency exchange that sponsors the Los Angeles Lakers Arena , and we’ve even seen Matt Damon promoting it. Now, it’s resurfaced due to a…typo.

In particular, Crypto.com, instead of transferring the amount of 100 Australian dollars to a client from Melbourne, mistakenly transferred the amount of 10.5 million dollars. In fact, the interesting thing is that the exchange did not notice its mistake until seven months later and by then, part of the money had already been spent.

The original transaction took place in May 2021, with the company employee entering the wrong amount. Crypto.com realized its mistake during an audit in December 2021.

The lucky customer didn’t report the wrong amount to the company and instead bought a 5-bedroom villa for her sister worth $1.35 million.

The company is now trying to get the money back through a lawsuit it filed. As the Guardian reports , the company managed to freeze its client’s funds in February 2022. The court ordered the client to sell the house and return the money to the exchange with interest. However, the trial has not ended and the case will continue in October.

There’s no doubt that if you saw something like this on the bill and knew it shouldn’t be there, it’s your responsibility to call the sender and let them know. If you detain someone else’s property, you are effectively taking property by fraud, it does not belong to you, you must return it. – Justin Lawrence, attorney Henderson & Ball Lawyers
