Apple: Man saved in Alaska using iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS

And he is in good health

The “ Emergency SOS ” feature released with iOS 16.1 saved a man in Alaska when he was stranded in a rural area.

It was learned that on December 1st, Alaska State Troopers received a notification that a man traveling on a snowmobile from Noorvik to Kotzebue had been stranded.

This man was in a remote location with no signal and activated his iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS to alert authorities to his situation.

Minutes later, Apple’s Emergency Response Center worked with local rescue teams and sent searchers directly to that spot (via GPS). The man was successfully rescued a short time later and was in good health.

Apple stated that this feature may not work in places above 62° latitude, such as northern parts of Canada or Alaska, and Kotzebue is near 69°.

For the record, “Emergency SOS” via satellite is designed to allow iPhone 14 owners to contact emergency services using a satellite connection when a cellular connection or WiFi is not available.

The new iPhone 14 feature is only available in the US right now and will soon roll out to France, Germany, Ireland and the UK.
