Netflix: Idris Elba’s Luther Returns Stronger With Sequel – Release Date
And in theaters Luther: The Fallen Sun
Last December we informed you that the sequel movie of the Luther series will be called ” Luther: The Fallen Sun ” and will come in March exclusively on Netflix.
Now Netflix has announced its exact premiere date, and so Idris Elba ‘s return to the role of the iconic detective will take place on March 10 , while also making a short stop in theaters from February 24 , something we’ve seen happen on his great Netflix Originals movies.
Watch the Luther: The Fallen Sun teaser:
According to the film’s official synopsis: ” In “Luther: The Fallen Sun – the sequel to the award-winning TV epic reimagined for film – a chilling serial killer terrorizes London, while genius but disgraced detective John Luther sits behind the bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber-psychopath now stalking him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.”
In fact, Elba reveals that despite the bigger budget and scale, the film will retain the harsh and gloomy texture of the series, as well as its blood-stained sets:
“It’s very dangerous when you’re expanding from TV to film to throw in a lot of money and then change the features of the show,” he says. “I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, we didn’t alter the parameters of Luther too much. We’re upping the action and upping the stakes. But the moment [of Season 3] with the man under the bed? That doesn’t cost a lot of money . These moments remain intact.”

In addition to Elba in the cast, we know that Cynthia Erivo will participate in an as yet unknown role, and Andy Serkis ( Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Lord of the Rings) will play the villain of the film. In fact, Dermot Crowley will return in the role of Schenk.
The film was directed by Jamie Payne and the script was written by the creator of the series, Neil Cross . Luther ran for 5 seasons on the BBC from 2010 to 2019.
Luther: The Fallen Sun will premiere in select theaters on February 24th and from March 10th exclusively on Netflix.
