How much it cost to make God of War: Ragnarok has been revealed
And it touches the production costs of huge Hollywood productions
Lately, video game productions have reached what we call “cinematic levels”, as in addition to how huge a scale they have and how many thousands of developers work on them, we see Hollywood actors starring in them, while their stories end up being made into movies ( see The Last of Us, Gears of War and Ghost of Tsushima ).
An example of a massive AAA video game is God of War: Ragnarok , which has been a huge commercial success for Sony, having sold over 11 million copies as of last February . How much do you think it might have cost to produce such a neat game?
Through an article in The Guardian , which hosts an interview with Shuhei Yoshida (Head of Indie Game Development at SIE), the exact amount became known. At one point in the interview where they refer to video game development costs that have skyrocketed in recent years compared to the previous decade, they compare the budget of God of War 3 to that of God of War: Ragnarok.

In particular God of War III which was released in 2010 as an absolute blockbuster game of the time for the PS3 had cost $44 million to develop. On the other hand, God of War: Ragnarok released on PS5 cost around $200 million . To give you a measure of comparison, its budget is almost as much as that of the first ” Avatar ” ($237 million), while it equals in cost big productions of Disney and Marvel Studios, such as ” The Lion King ” (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Iron Man 3 and Fast 9 among many others.
Recently God of War: Ragnarok has been enriched with a lot of extras and free content .
