Apple may bring hybrid OLED technology to iPads
And we might see them in 2023-2024
Apple will likely adopt a hybrid technology for OLED panels in iPads by 2024. This, according to a DigiTimes report , will allow it to make thinner devices while reducing production costs.
The company seems to combine a rigid glass OLED substrate with a flexible thin film, so that this new process will bring down the cost considerably, since it will not require a backlight layer.
This is not the first time we hear about the hybrid technology that Apple is probably preparing, as last August , the Korean outlet, The Elec, had reported exactly the same. However, the new report that has now surfaced claims that Apple prefers hybrid OLED, rather than the flexible OLED panels it uses in iPhones, because flexible panels tend to “wrinkle” at larger sizes.
All of the above comes shortly after rumors that Apple will work with another company that will contribute to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and MacBook Pro.
Apple is expected to continue using the mini-LED backlight technology until the said hybrid technology “mature” and is ready for commercialization, which is unlikely to happen before 2024.
