Quentin Tarantino: There is a kind of violence that is a red line and will never be crossed
And yet, being the master of violent scenes has its limits, as he reveals
Quentin Tarantino ‘s films and his directorial style are full of blood, and anyone who has seen even one of his films knows that he loves the grotesque and excessive, borderline comical violence . You only have to watch a few scenes in Pulp Fiction , Kill Bill , Inglorious Basterds and The Hateful Eight to know that Tarantino is…bloodthirsty in his films.
However, the legendary director revealed that he finally has his limits when it comes to violence and a “red line” that he himself will never cross – after all, he has one film left in his filmography to retire from cinema, as he has stated countless times. Speaking on the sidelines of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival to Variety, Tarantino revealed that this red line of his is not to kill animals in movies, ” even insects ,” as he famously put it.
Explaining his reasoning around his own limits on violence he said: ” I have one issue…they’ve done it a lot in European movies and Asian movies…I have a big problem with animals being killed in movies. That’s a line I can’t cross. And insects, too. Unless I’m paying to see some weird documentary, I’m not paying to see real death. “

“Part of the way movies work is that everything is just made up. That’s why I can stand the violent scenes, because we’re all just messing around. Some animal, some dog, some llama, some fly, some rat, doesn’t give penny for your movie.” – Tarantino
He went on to describe the thought, also saying, ” I’d kill a million rats, but I don’t necessarily want to kill him in a movie or see him killed in a movie, because I’m not paying to see real death. Almost always, it’s not just the violence I have a problem with. There’s usually the incompetence factor as well . “

In another recent interview with Deadline, Tarantino reiterated that he will be retiring from directing feature films and hinted that he might do a TV series or even a short film or play .
As for The Movie Critic , we recently learned new information regarding its plot. It will chronicle the life of a man writing porn film reviews in 1977 California. This guy wasn’t famous but he used to write reviews for a certain pink magazine. One of Tarantino’s jobs as a teenager was filling vending machines with magazines, and he discovered this “interesting magazine” among them.
Tarantino’s quote starts at about 33:07 of the video below.
