The Last of Us now runs much better on PC

Another huge update available

Now the PC version of The Last of Us Part I is in better shape than ever, since thanks to the big Patch v1.0.5.0 that has just been released, Naughty Dog , in collaboration with the development team Iron Galaxy, left in the past some of the major problems.

In case you don’t know, the long-awaited transfer of the award-winning experience to computers initially arrived with many problems, since among other things the community had complained about crashes, stuttering, very long load times, bad optimization, mouse jitter, visual glitches and other issues . This resulted in the game’s score going “red” on Steam with Mostly Negative reviews from players, even spawning memes making fun of the whole situation.

However, now the game is in a much better state and the new patch brings substantial performance improvements , while improving the quality of textures on Low and Medium settings. In particular, the developers optimized their code to make better use of CPU resources. At the same time, the asset loading system became more efficient by reducing loading times, while the content in general is now more optimized for better performance at various levels.

In fact, the huge amount of time needed the first time the game was opened for shader building is now a thing of the past . Naughty Dog has significantly improved the mechanism, so you won’t need to wait so long. Of course, all these changes make the shaders for players who have already started the game incompatible, which means that after the patch they will need to be recompiled.

Here are all the changes in Patch v1.0.5.0 of The Last of Us Part I for PC:

  • Reduced shader building times
  • Optimized code to improve global CPU performance
  • Optimized content to improve performance across several levels
  • Improved level loading to help reduce the amount of ‘Please Wait’ and loading screens
  • Added a new Effects Density setting, which adjusts the density and number of non-critical visual effects (Options > Graphics)
  • Increased crowd sizes on Low and Medium Ambient Character Density settings and added a Very Low option (Options > Graphics)
  • Implemented additional scalability tuning for Low and Medium in-game Graphics settings
  • Reduced the VRAM impact of texture quality settings, allowing most players to increase their texture quality settings or experience improved performance with their current settings
  • Fixed a crash that would occur on boot on Windows 11
  • Fixed a crash that could occur on Intel Arc
  • Fixed a crash that may occur when starting a New Game in Left Behind prior to the completion of shader building

  • Fixed an issue where players could not click on ‘Jump To Unbound’ when prompted in the custom controls settings (Options > Controls > Input > Customize Controls)

  • Fixed an issue where adjustments to Lens Flare (Options > Graphics > Visual Effects Settings > Lens Flare) were not applied
  • [Pittsburgh] Fixed an issue where players may consistently fall out-of-world when restarting at the checkpoint in the bookstore
  • [Left Behind] Fixed an issue where players may get soft locked when jumping into the electrified water
