Shell will use AI to explore new oil fields

Shell has announced that in partnership with big data analytics company SparkCognition, it will use artificial intelligence technology to explore the ocean depths for oil deposits, as well as to boost its production.

SparkCognition’s algorithms will process and analyze vast amounts of seismic data to discover new fields for Shell.

AI will help speed up and make subsea exploration more efficient, drastically reducing the time it takes to confirm a deposit from nine months to nine days . The technology will produce undersea images using less seismic data than usual. Fewer acoustic waves sent for exploration will help minimize disturbance to the subsea environment, while speeding up operations and saving Shell the costs of high-performance computing.
