The PS5 broke a huge all-time record in February
As for the America market
The PlayStation 5 achieved a remarkable feat in the United States market, setting a new record for the highest sales ever achieved by any PlayStation console in February. Specifically, according to new statistics from Circana (formerly known as NPD), more PlayStation consoles were sold in February 2023 than any other February in the brand’s history! Yes, that means it even managed to beat the previous all-time record set in 2005 by the PlayStation 2.
The huge success of the PS5 in the past month is obviously due to several factors, such as the increased availability of the console, since finally players who waited for months were able to find the system immediately and easily in 2023. At the same time, its course was helped by the popularity of recent multiplatform releases and in particular Hogwarts Legacy.
PS5’s record-breaking sales helped boost total hardware revenue for February 2023 to $495 million, a 68% year-over-year increase. The Nintendo Switch, which dominated the US market for most of 2020 and 2021, has slipped to second place for February 2023, but its sales are expected to get a major boost very soon thanks to The Legend of Zelda : Tears of the Kingdom.
In terms of software, Avalanche Games’ Hogwarts Legacy is undoubtedly the big winner of the month, since it topped the February software charts. Warner Bros. Interactive recently announced that the game sold 12 million copies in its first two weeks, and that success seems to be continuing. In particular, the Harry Potter title became the first to dethrone Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from the top spot in the charts, since it was released last October.
