An asteroid the size of two stadiums is approaching Earth
Astronomers discovered it just a few days ago
An asteroid the size of two football fields was spotted just a few days ago by astronomers, according to a post by NASA.
Astronomers named it “2022 OE2” and discovered it approaching Earth on July 26. This asteroid is estimated to be between 170 and 360 meters across, and if it were to collide with Earth it would release energy equivalent to more than 1,000 atomic bombs .
NASA, however, reassures us, because it has been confirmed that its orbit will not bring it into conflict with our planet. Specifically, it passed the Earth on August 4 at a distance of about 5.15 million kilometers, that is, about 13 times greater than the average distance between the Earth and the moon.
But more generally, NASA is tracking thousands of space rocks like 2022 OE2 in case you’re worried about such a threat. At least for the next 100 years we don’t know of any asteroids that threaten the human race with extinction, according to NASA.
