Elon Musk’s SpaceX will soon offer mobile telephony
Beyond satellite internet
Recently, Elon Musk , head of the most famous aerospace technology company, SpaceX , as well as Mike Sievert, president and CEO of T-Mobile , which is one of the largest companies operating in the field of telecommunications in the world, met at Starbase in Texas to reveal how they will join forces.
In more detail, the two companies announced Coverage Above and Beyond . This is an ambitious partnership plan that aims to bring cell phone coverage to the entire United States . This will include remote locations that traditional cell phone signals have difficulty reaching. To achieve this, SpaceX’s many Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Starlink satellites already in use to provide internet access will be leveraged.
For the record, over half a million square miles of the United States have no cell phone coverage, resulting in disconnections or people resorting to expensive satellite phones. To solve this problem, T-Mobile and SpaceX will build a new network that will be transmitted by Starlink satellites, but using T-Mobile’s already existing midband spectrum. This way they will be able to provide coverage almost everywhere, as long as the customer can see the sky.
In fact, T-Mobile expects that most smartphones on its network will be directly compatible with the upcoming service, which will be available on a trial basis from the end of 2023. In fact, Musk emphasized that he is open to cooperation with other carriers from the whole world , since its goal is to have global coverage for everyone.
