New research shows that a heart attack is more likely to happen on Mondays

Big rates on Sundays too

According to new research , a heart attack is more likely to happen to people on Mondays. The research was done on 10,528 patients from 2013 to 2018 who had been admitted to Icelandic hospitals with a specific heart attack, myocardial infarction (or STEMI).

The research was presented at the British Cardiovascular Society conference in the UK but has not yet been peer-reviewed. The researchers found an increase in rates of STEMI heart attacks at the beginning of the work week, with the highest rates on Monday. There were also high rates on Sundays as well.

Scientists have not been able to fully explain why this happens more often on Mondays.

STEMI is the most serious type of heart attack and occurs when a major coronary artery is completely blocked. Symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, stomach pain, palpitations, anxiety, sweating and dizziness.

Myocardial infarction is caused according to Wikipedia when a coronary artery (i.e. artery of the heart – there are 3 main coronary arteries) becomes blocked, when the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen – an essential element for the life of every cell. Atherosclerotic plaque is the main cause of this blockage.
