Twitter prepares encryption for messages

By Signal standards

Chaotic developments on Twitter include good news. As researcher Jane Manchun Wong found, the Twitter app contains code that indicates encryption is coming for DMs. In fact, Elon Musk responded to the researcher with a winking emoji, essentially confirming the new function. Unfortunately, it cannot be officially confirmed since Musk disbanded the Twitter communication team.

In April, right after Twitter’s takeover bid, Elon Musk said:

Twitter DMs must have end-to-end encryption, like Signal, so that no one can spy or hack your messages.

Twitter is mostly used by journalists, so such a development would be positive for freedom of speech, especially in countries with repressive regimes.

It is worth noting that Twitter had attempted to develop message encryption in 2018, but the feature was never made available to users.
