WhatsApp is trying to keep Iranians connected

Despite government measures

Unrest in Iran continues, with the government restricting the connectivity of its citizens in an attempt to stifle their ability to organize, with massive protests making headlines around the world. WhatsApp said it was trying to keep Iranians connected after the government blocked the app.

We continue to connect the world with privacy. We support people’s right to access private messages. We do not block Iranian numbers. We are working to keep our Iranian friends connected and will do everything in our power to keep our service up and running.

Instagram and WhatsApp were the last two social networks left in Iran after the government restricted the internet due to the scale of the protests.

It all started last week, when 22-year-old Masha Amini fell into a coma and died three days later. She was in custody at a police station, having been brutally beaten by the Ethon Police for not wearing her headscarf properly. This seems to have been the final straw for the citizens. The women of Iran, with many men on their side, poured into the streets in more than 50 cities, burning their headscarves and cutting their hair. There are several dead and injured from the police response, while police stations and patrol cars have been set on fire.
