What to expect from Google I/O 2023 on Wednesday?

Device and software announcements

This year’s Google I/O is just around the corner and everything shows that it will be one of the company’s richest presentations, with many announcements. So what can we expect to see on Wednesday, May 10 at 20:00 Greek time?

Perhaps the most interesting announcement will have to do with Google’s new foldable. The company has confirmed that it will present the new Pixel Fold, while rumors speak of a 5.8-inch external screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 7.6-inch internal screen, again with 120Hz. In the images we’ve seen, it appears to have thicker bezels than Samsung’s Z Fold, but it’s supposed to have a more robust build, with a gap-free hinge and a battery that will last 24 hours of normal use.

But contrary to the character of Pixel phones, which offer amazing value for money, the Pixel Fold is expected to cost $1,700.

The series will definitely have the Pixel 7a, which will come with a similar design to the 6a, but the addition of the new Tensor G2 processor, a faster screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, wireless charging and a 64MP camera will definitely increase its price and is expected $50 more expensive than its predecessor, reaching $499.

At Google I/O, the Pixel Tablet is expected to be presented, which we also saw at last year’s Google I/O, but this time the time of its release has arrived. It’s practically two devices in one. It’s a tablet, but it can also be used as a smart display based on a speaker. It will feature the Tensor G2 chip, while the coating of nano-ceramic material will offer a more premium feel. Its screen will be 11 inches with 8GB of RAM and its price will start in Europe from €600 for 128GB of storage space.

Of course, a central role in the presentation will be played by the unveiling of Android 14. Test versions have been available since February for developers, and Google intends to complete its development in the summer. Of the features confirmed so far, we have improved accessibility, stronger app security, better battery management, and new features in file sharing. Leaks have shown that there will also be a hub for all health applications which will be called Health Connect.

It’s very possible that we’ll also get a sneak peek at the upcoming Pixel 8, which – if the leaks are confirmed – will be a slight upgrade from its predecessor, with more rounded corners and a different camera setup. Rumors speak of the integration of the new Tensor G3 chip, with 8GB of RAM in the standard model and 12GB of RAM in the Pro. The camera hardware may not change much, but leaked code suggests that Google will bring its photo blurring tool to video as well. In any case, the presentation of the Google flagship will take place in the fall.

Google’s wearables also have smaller, but not non-existent, chances of presentation. We might see the next Pixel Watch or its next AR glasses. The presentation of some technology more unusual than everyday devices is also possible, since we are talking about one of the biggest technological giants on the planet.
