Turkey blocked access to Twitter

Elon Musk commented

After Turkey’s devastating earthquake left tens of thousands dead and people still trapped in the rubble, Bloomberg reveals that Turks have been unable to access Twitter since Wednesday afternoon. Those who resorted to using a VPN were able to use the service normally. Opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu accused the government of deliberately blocking access to Twitter.

I told my friends in the field to use a VPN to coordinate rescues. This outrageous palace government cut off social media communication. The result is fewer cries for help. We know everything you are trying to hide. We await your explanation.

The Turkish government did not comment. Twitter is currently the number one social media in Turkey which is being used as a tool to coordinate rescue operations and those affected are sharing photos and videos of the devastation left behind by the earthquakes.

Twitter has not made an official statement – as it no longer has a communications team following the firing of Elon Musk. However, on Wednesday afternoon, Musk said that access to Twitter in Turkey would be restored soon.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that the Turkish government has blocked access to social media in the midst of a crisis in the country. It has done so again during its military operations in Syria, while in 2014 it temporarily blocked Twitter from the country when users shared papers and documents implicating President Erdogan in corruption scandals. Erdogan’s government has also been heavily criticized for its handling of the recent disaster.
