Google accidentally gave $250,000 to a hacker and he returned it!
Everyone can make mistakes after all
A huge blunder seems to have been made by a Google employee , which cost -temporarily- the company almost 250,000 dollars ! Specifically, without any reason, the company paid almost a quarter of a million to a white hat hacker!
We are talking about Sam Curry, who works as a security engineer at Yuga Labs, the company responsible for extremely popular NFT projects such as Bored Ape Yacht Club. According to Curry’s post on Twitter, Google simply transferred the huge amount to him and after three weeks of efforts on his part, no one contacted him.
Yes, you got it right. Curry immediately tried to return the money, but said he wouldn’t have a problem if Google didn’t want his money. Eventually, after the matter became public and the tweet made the rounds on the internet, Google was quick to correct the mistake.
Specifically, a Google representative told CNN that there was a problem with the payment on its end and that it wasn’t supposed to go to Curry, but to someone else. It was even revealed to be “human error,” with the spokesperson stressing that the company appreciates Curry’s quick reporting of the matter.
But how exactly did Curry end up with $249,999 in his account?
Curry, in addition to Yuga Labs, also works as a white hat hacker or bug bounty hunter. That means it tries to find security holes and problems in the software of Google, Facebook and other tech giants, who pay handsomely for each find. So Curry was already in Google’s payment system when the company tried to pay another bug bounty hunter. Somehow, due to human error, the huge amount ended up falling into the wrong hands…
