Everything we know so far about Disney Plus’ new Star Wars series

“The Acolyte,” Disney Plus ‘ new Star Wars series is finally getting a little more revealed as Disney announced the cast and that filming has begun. 

Who will star in The Acolyte? 

In all seriousness, in addition to star Amandla Stenberg (The Eddy, The Hate U Give) we learned that there will be a Squid Game and “The Matrix” meeting in the Star Wars universe, as well as Lee Jung-Jae , who we learned as Player 456 in Netflix series will co-star Carrie-Anne Moss, known as Trinity of the Matrix films. 

They will be co-starring Dafne Keen of ” Logan ” and ” His Dark Materials “, Manny Jacinto (“Nine Perfect Strangers”), Jodie Turner-Smith (“Queen & Slim”), Rebecca Henderson (“Inventing Anna”), Charlie Barnett (“Russian Doll”) and Dean-Charles Chapman (“1917”).

To mark the start of filming, Disney and Lucasfilm released a first look from the set featuring Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-jae in the foreground. Leslye Headland, co-creator of the Netflix series Russian Doll, is taking over the creation and showrunner role of Star Wars: The Acolyte, and will also direct the first episode.

The plot of The Acolyte

We have officially learned the first information about the plot of The Acolyte, which confirms that it will be the first live-action Star Wars series that will take place in the – unexplored for the small screen – period of the High Republic. As the official summary typically states: 

The Acolyte is a mystery thriller that will transport viewers to a galaxy full of dark secrets and emerging dark side forces in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they face are darker than they ever expected.”

When is it released? 

Lucasfilm has yet to mention a release window for The Acolyte, although the fact that filming is already underway is an encouraging sign that we could be seeing it on screens in either late 2023 or early 2024.
