Yesterday, almost all of Italy was without internet for hours!
Five whole hours in… “digital darkness”
Yesterday, Sunday afternoon, February 5, almost all of Italy was left without internet.
Going into detail, according to the report by NetBlocks, a watchdog that monitors cyber security and internet governance, real-time data showed that nationwide connectivity fell to 26% of the average. The whole incident left the majority of the country’s residents in “digital darkness” for almost 5 hours , affecting many large cities.
From Florence and Rome, to Milan and the region of Sicily, millions of Italians were left without any internet access. The issue was caused by a problem faced by Telecom Italia (TIM) which is the largest Italian telecommunications service provider by revenue and subscribers. According to the company’s words, the issue was with an “international connection”, while reports on social media speak of strong irritation from users and especially from football fans who wanted to ‘stream’ the Inter match.
Access has now been restored.
