Getty Images prohibits images designed by artificial intelligence

For the sake of art

The head of Getty Images, Craig Peters, said his company bans art created by artificial intelligence such as DALL-E or other similar imaging tools. The reason is the potential copyright issues that may arise, as there are ” unanswered questions ” in this matter and Getty Images wants to limit the financial and reputational risk to its clients.

He did not say whether Getty is already facing legal trouble with AI-generated content, but admitted there is an ” extremely limited ” amount of such material on the platform.

The company is working with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity to create filters that will detect AI-generated material, while asking users to report anything that passes through the filter. Competitor Shutterstock is already following a similar line.

Creating images through AI is not illegal, but AIs often use sample images that may be subject to copyright, exposing customers who purchase an image to legal trouble. As a new technology, it is not yet restricted by legislation.
