The US officially dropped the charges against HUAWEI’s CFO

Four years after her arrest

US prosecutors asked the judge to drop the bank fraud charges and other charges against HUAWEI’s CFO. Four years after Meng Wanzhou’s dramatic arrest in Canada and strained US-China relations, Meng reached a deal with prosecutors to drop the charges against her on December 1, 2022.

The lack of evidence that Meng violated the agreement led the US government to drop all charges. HUAWEI as a company is still considered a threat to US national security, but no trial has yet been set. HUAWEI to this day declares itself innocent.

Meng had been charged with bank fraud, misleading HSBC bank about HUAWEI’s activities in Iran, in violation of US sanctions. As part of her release agreement, Meng admitted she made false statements about the company’s activities in Iran in 2013 during a meeting with a bank executive.

Meng – who is the daughter of HUAWEI founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei – has once again taken on the role of CFO, as well as rotating chairmanship of the company.
