Hacker violated 150,000 security cameras of prisons, schools, hospitals

A vulnerability in the systems of the security company Verkada was exploited by a hacker who gained access to 150,000 security cameras installed in schools, hospitals, prisons and businesses. According to Bloomberg , even cameras from Verkada’s own offices were violated. The company announced that it is cooperating with the authorities, but did not confirm the scale of the attack.

Tesla and Virgin Hyperloop were also victims of the hacker. Footage released shows a Tesla warehouse in Shanghai. Other videos show Florida hospital staff restraining a man in his bed and Massachusetts police officers interrogating a man wearing handcuffs.

The attack was claimed by hacker Tille Kottmann, who simply used a “super admin” account to gain access to the company’s data. As for the reasons that led him to this act?

Enough curiosity, a fight for freedom of information and opposition to intellectual property, a big dose of anti-capitalism and a dose of anarchism – and it’s also a lot of fun not to do it.

We have disabled all internal admin accounts to prevent unauthorized access. Our security team and an external security company are investigating the size of the issue and we have informed the Authorities. – Verkada
