US Senator to Elon Musk: Build your companies or Congress will
He was mocked by Elon Musk
Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey has warned Elon Musk about the course he has chosen, following the world’s richest man’s tongue-in-cheek response to a lawmaker’s request for information on Twitter’s new account verification policies.
The Senator did not appreciate Musk’s response and responded:
One of your companies is under investigation by the FTC. The NHTSA is investigating another of your companies for killing people. And you’re spending your time messing around online. Build your companies. Otherwise, Congress will.
In a letter, Markey asked Musk to explain how the Washington Post was able to create a verified account impersonating him and why the official Twitter pop-up told users that the account was verified because of his government position. Musk has until November 25 to respond in writing.
Although Markey’s warning is uncertain whether it will lead to action by the administration, the likelihood of a response increased when Democrats secured the Senate majority on Sunday. Markey also sits on the Senate Communications, Media and Broadband committee, raising the possibility of action against Twitter.
