Hackers are selling RTX 4090 cards for up to $4000 on eBay!
History seems to be repeating itself…
Yes, even though miners are now out of the equation with the Ethereum merge, scalpers are still wreaking havoc on the PC hardware market , wiping out stock of the brand new RTX 4090 , only to later sell it overpriced to hardware enthusiasts.
Going into details, Nvidia’s new generation of graphics cards debuted on October 12th with the RTX 4090 and it only took a few hours for eBay to be flooded with listings . In particular, astute resellers are offering the stock they managed to secure, with prices starting at $2,299, going up to $4,000 in the worst cases.
At this point let us remind you that the official retail price of the graphics card in America amounts to $1599. This means that most scalpers try to sell at almost double the price and with quite a lot of success. As PCMag.com reports , 135 RTX 4090 graphics cards were sold on eBay on October 12 alone, with an average price of $2,524.
The icing on the cake is that many of the listings are pre-orders, which means the scalpers don’t even have the card in their hands and are simply selling the order they managed to place to another store! Therefore, those who decide to pay the exorbitant “hat” will have to wait even more, if indeed the scalper succeeds in obtaining the card and there are no other problems…
Of course, things are not as bad as in 2020 and 2021, when the global shortage of chips combined with the then remarkable increase in mining profitability had completely dried up the market. However, there is speculation that Nvidia may be deliberately keeping RTX 4090 availability levels low as it still struggles to clear the mountains of RTX 3000 graphics cards it has in its warehouses.
