Xbox: More Acquisitions Coming After Activision? – Phil Spencer answers
“I want to make sure Xbox is at the forefront”
The last few years have seen countless acquisitions in the gaming industry, with companies like Tencent, Sony, EA and other giants investing millions. Of course, Microsoft is also not absent from this dance , which added various studios and an entire publishing company, Bethesda, to its workforce, intending to do the same with Activision Blizzard .
As it seems, the acquisitions are not going to stop from the colossal American company , according to the new statements of the head of its gaming department, Phil Spencer . In more detail, the head of Xbox was in Japan for the needs of the Tokyo Game Show 2022. In this context, he took a walk through the headquarters of Kojima Productions , while also granting some new interviews.
So, speaking to CNBC, Spencer emphasized that he wants to ensure that Xbox will be at the forefront of innovation and competition, so he is not going to stop acquisitions. In particular, the senior executive addressed the moves of Tencent and Sony, which he noted have a larger gaming footprint than Microsoft and are constantly making new investments.
The relevant excerpt of the interview follows below, translated into Greek. The reporter’s question is marked in bold.
Aside from Activision and what might happen there, will you continue to pursue more acquisitions? Because Tencent is getting heavily involved and you also have Sony making quite a few acquisitions. Or are you just going to wait and see what happens with Activision and then take a break from buying more studios for a while?
Just as you put it, you put it perfectly. This is such a competitive market. I don’t think we can hit pause on anything. You know, Tencent is the biggest gaming company on the planet right now and continues to invest heavily in content and game creators. Sony is a bigger business than we are in gaming right now and they also continue to invest.
If you look at the investments we’ve made, it’s an extremely competitive market. We are trying to be a major player. We want to provide great content for our players and we will stay active. As I said, whether it’s investing in our internal teams that are already making great games that people know and love, or whether it’s creating new partnerships.
One of the things I like about coming here to Tokyo is the developers. I get to meet with our new partners like Kojima Productions and talk to some of our existing partners at publishing companies and independent studios about games we want to make. If that turns into acquisitions and mergers, we are active there as well. So the work for us never ends. We’re in a competitive market, and I want to make sure Xbox is at the forefront of innovation and competition.
