Mortal Kombat: Almost Had No Fatalities, But Why?
Imagine if the phrase “Finish Him” didn’t even exist in history
Believe it or not, the legendary Mortal Kombat might not have had the iconic Fatalities . This news was revealed by the creator of the franchise himself, Ed Boon , on the 30th anniversary of the series, and as he stated, the team had messed around a lot during development and experimented with what they could do. the player in battle.
Ed Boon gave an interview to YouTube channel Brian Tong and stated that initially, the only character that would have a fatality would be the final boss, Shang-Tsung . In fact, this character would not be that strong and the fatality he would have would have been a simple beheading. However, midway through development, Boon and his team thought it would be fun to put this power in the hands of the player, and began to come up with gruesome ways that opponents could be taken down.
Shang Tsung, the final boss of the game, did this move where when he defeated you, he would take a large sword and cut your head off. It was just going to be a boss, but then as we were experimenting we made Johnny Cage do an uppercut with the same animation. As soon as we made it, everyone lost their minds. Half the people who had seen it told us we couldn’t do that and the other half that we couldn’t not do it.
Boon said he couldn’t keep quiet because everyone was talking about it in the office. And thanks to those reactions he saw back then, he made this “joke” a must in Mortal Kombat and one of its most popular features.
So, can you imagine a Mortal Kombat without the iconic phrase: Finish Him?
