New research shows just how much graphics card prices have finally come down

At the start of the year looking for a reasonably priced graphics card seemed like a futile endeavor, but as we approach the debut of Nvidia’s new RTX 4000s and AMD’s RX 7000s, and with cryptocurrency values ​​sinking, mining significantly less profitable, the market situation changed dramatically.

GPU prices have started to fall everywhere since January, both in retail stores and second-hand markets like eBay, where the biggest difference is found. In particular, Tom’s Hardware conducted a detailed survey of the American market, finding out exactly how much prices have fallen since the beginning of the year.

So, according to his research, prices for current-generation models have dropped by an average of 14% since June 1 ^, while for previous-generation models the drop reaches up to 17%. In fact, the plunge is even more dramatic if you consider the last six months and not just June, with graphics card prices down 57% since January.

Of course, these numbers refer to eBay, where the prices have reached almost the suggested retail price or even a little below depending on the case. On the other hand, the drop in prices in retail stores, i.e. for those looking for a sealed product that has not possibly been used for mining, is not as fast. Most stores still try to sell their stock at high prices , in many cases creating bundles to entice consumers. In comparison, since June 1 ^, prices in retail stores have fallen just 3% in contrast to the roughly 15% drop recorded on eBay.

So focusing on eBay listings alone, the price of almost every GPU has dropped by 10% from last month. For example, the RTX 3080 12GB was selling for $800 which is the official suggested retail price, while both the RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 3070 were available close to its suggested retail price.

Only the mid-range models of the RTX 3000 series were still selling at higher than official prices, with an average cap of 10% for the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3060 and 20% for the RTX 3050. By comparison, AMD’s cards were all available at lower than suggested prices, with the exception of the RX 6950 XT.

Of course, eBay’s data also concerns Greek consumers, but the survey does not cover Greek stores where the picture may differ quite a bit.
