US eases sanctions against HUAWEI

Is there still hope?

A few years ago HUAWEI was climbing to the top of smartphone manufacturers before the US sanctions came. Various restrictions imposed by the US deprived the Chinese company of American technology, both in hardware and software, with the infamous deprivation of Google services from HUAWEI phones and the termination of cooperation with the main chip supplier, TSMC.

But now it seems that something is changing, since according to Bloomberg , the US Department of Commerce has issued a decision that allows HUAWEI to have access to certain technologies again.

Of course, the US is not proceeding with this decision out of the goodness of its heart, but because it does not want to be left behind technologically. That is, they want to maintain the lead in the ability to set technological standards, as China is rapidly closing the gap.

American stakeholders must fully participate in international standards organizations, especially when the critical but sometimes invisible standards they set have significant implications for national security and commercial applications. – Alan Estevez, Department of Commerce

What this means practically for Huawei remains to be seen in the near future.
