Instagram shamelessly copies BeReal’s core feature

It is in testing phase

The new “anti-Instagram” app BeReal is gaining more and more users who are fed up with the “fake” world of the social media giant and this has not gone unnoticed by Instagram’s radar. So the Meta subsidiary decided to do what it does best. To copy the competition, as it has done with Snapchat and TikTok.

As Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer known for reverse technical research to find early versions that come with future updates, Instagram is adopting BeReal’s core feature. In fact, this fact was also confirmed by a representative of Instagram, saying that it is currently an “ internal prototype “, without giving further information.

According to Paluzzi, Instagram users will see a notification at different times of the day, prompting them to post a photo of what they’re doing at that moment within two minutes. The feature is called Candid Challenges and once the user taps the notification, the Instagram app will open the selfie and the main camera at the same time. Content recorded by users will be uploaded as a Story. In other words, it is the exact same function as BeReal.

The BeReal application has been particularly successful among Gen Z, drastically increasing the number of downloads in recent months. In the App Store it has surpassed Instagram (No.8) and is at the top of the applications, while throughout the summer it has been in the top ten of the most popular free applications.
