Oppenheimer: This is how Cillian Murphy reacted when Nolan told him he was going to star
“It was the best day of my life,” said the 46-year-old talented actor
Cillian Murphy has a rich history with Christopher Nolan as the two worked together on The Dark Knight trilogy , with the Irish talent playing the Scarecrow. Murphy then received the call from Nolan again to star in ‘ Inception ‘ opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and once again for the film ‘ Dunkirk ‘, the first film in Nolan’s filmography with a war theme.
Now, in his new film ” Oppenheimer ” which takes place in the middle of World War II, Nolan has chosen the star of the series ” Peaky Blinders ” to be the central figure of the film. For the first time in his career, Murphy will actually carry a blockbuster film on his back, and indeed of the level of Chris Nolan.
But how did the actor feel when he called him to tell him the news? His reaction as well as the conversation between them was revealed by the director-protagonist duo in their new interview with Entertainment Weekly. Their conversation went something like this:
-Nolan: Nobody knew what I was doing, nobody knew what I was doing. To be able to pick up the phone, call you and say, “This time is the movie you’re going to carry and really show what you can do,” is honestly one of my favorite moments in the movie business. , when I had this conversation with you.
-Murphy: It was one of the best days of my life, I tell you that, when you called me. (Laughs) I’ll always be there for Chris, whatever the role, but, deep down, it’s a dream to play a leading role. The thing was, I had no idea. There was no pre-work or anything, they just called me. So it was very exciting, stressful and scary all at the same time.
-Nolan: Yeah, and that was before you read the script…
-Murphy: Exactly!
-Nolan: …which probably didn’t make it any less scary.
-Murphy: I’ll tell you this: it’s the best script I’ve ever read, for sure.
Nolan and Oppenheimer’s production went above and beyond as they recreated the first atomic bomb test without the use of CGI (special effects).
Characteristically Nolan had said: I think recreating the Trinity test (the first detonation of a nuclear weapon in New Mexico), without the help of special effects, was a huge challenge. Andrew Jackson—my visual effects supervisor, who I brought in early on—was looking at how we could make many of the visual elements of the film practical. From the representation of quantum dynamics and quantum physics, the Trinity test itself, to the representation of Los Alamos on a plateau in New Mexico in exceptional weather conditions, much of which was essential to the film, in terms of the very difficult conditions out there – there were huge practical challenges”.
