Finally the ‘Core i’ names from Intel – This is what the new models will probably be called  

It will change the branding that has existed since 2008

Intel , the well-known processor manufacturer, seems to be planning to change the iconic branding of its Core CPUs, removing the “i” from their names . The move comes as Intel prepares to launch its next-generation Meteor Lake processors, which will use a new modular manufacturing process based on the UCIe interface.

According to leaked benchmarks and reports from VideoCardz and Wccftech, Intel will replace the names Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9 with the simpler Core 3, Core 5, Core 7 and Core 9 respectively . Some models will also have the “Ultra” suffix, such as the Core Ultra 5 1003H, which is said to have 18 cores and was found in the Ashes of the Singularity database.

In fact, Intel itself confirmed that it is indeed making branding changes for its Meteor Lake processors, but did not reveal details. In particular, Intel’s director of global communications, Bernard Fernandes, wrote on Twitter:

Yes, we are rebranding as we are at an inflection point for our plans for the consumer market in preparation for the upcoming launch of our Meteor Lake processors.

For the record, Meteor Lake is expected to be a major leap forward for Intel, as it will use a “chiplet” architecture that will allow for greater flexibility. Thanks to this change, Intel will be able to add and combine different components from different manufacturers on the same chip, using the UCIe interface to connect them. For example, Intel could make a laptop CPU with a CPU from itself, an SoC from Samsung, and a GPU made by TSMC.

The new branding could help Intel simplify its product list and differentiate the new CPUs from previous generations. However, it could also be confusing for consumers who have been used to the Core i designations since 2008. Intel should clearly explain what each Core number and the Ultra suffix mean, and how they compare to each other and to Ryzen AMD CPUs.

Intel is expected to launch Meteor Lake CPUs later this year or early next year.
