James Gunn calls for an end to “lazy” storytelling in superhero movies
He also talked about the new Superman
James Gunn , who is one of the two new CEOs of DC Studios , gave a new interview to the Inside of You podcast and stated among other things that many creators are lazy with their superhero stories.
The creator first addressed Superman: Legacy saying that he, as well as the entire production, will be very careful with the product they bring to theaters. He then emphasized that storytelling in hero stories is everything.
First, he talked about Superman: Legacy saying the following: ” We’re going to be very careful with the product we’re going to put out and make sure everything is as good as possible .”
He then stated that people are getting lazy with the storytelling of their superheroes.
They got to the point of saying: Ah! Here’s a superhero, let’s make a movie about him. And then let’s do a sequel because the first one did really well. And they don’t think it through. What makes one story stand out from the rest? What is the story at the heart of it all? Why is this character important? What makes this story different and can fill the need for people to go to the cinema and see it?
People get lazy with their storytelling and there’s a lot of pow pow and bam bam things that happen in movies and I’m watching say the 3rd act in a superhero movie and it really feels like there’s no rhythm or reason to what’s going on…no i care about the characters. They have become very generic.
I really like serious superhero movies and I really like comical superhero movies. I like superhero movies that have a mystery.
The Superman: Legacy story synopsis gives a first glimpse of what to expect: “Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent from Smallville, Kansas . He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that considers kindness old-fashioned.”
This is not the only project signed by Gunn within the DC Universe as he is also writing Creature Commandos, an animated series for Max, and together with a team of writers, they are planning the next 5-10 years of the DC universe and the next Chapters of.
Other big upcoming DCU movies like Superman: Legacy are ” The Brave and the Bold ” (featuring Batman and Robin) as well as Supergirl: World of Tomorrow .
