Ethereum co-founder: Facebook’s metaverse will fail
Loud statements from Vitalik Buterin
Vitalik Buterin , the Canadian programmer and writer known as one of the co-founders of Ethereum, the world’s second largest cryptocurrency, made some very interesting statements about the metaverse .
Specifically, through his personal Twitter account, Vitalik referred to the current efforts of the various companies, even making some predictions for the future. In more detail, he stated that he believes that at some point the metaverse will indeed become a reality , but not in the form presented and sought by the various technological giants, such as Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta.
Vitalik believes that it is still too early to know exactly what people want and thus there is no clear definition of what the metaverse is. Therefore, responding to a tweet, he stated:
The “metaverse” will eventually become a reality, but I don’t think it will end up anywhere any of the existing corporate efforts to purposely create.
Then, responding to another user, he spoke in the most unflattering terms about the metaverse that Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is trying to create, which Vitalik believes will fail. Specifically, he stated:
My review is deeper than “Metaverse Wikipedia” will beat “Metaverse Encyclopedia Britannica”. The thing is, we don’t know the definition of “metaverse” yet. It’s too early to know what people really want. So anything Facebook creates now will fail.
For the record, Facebook has started efforts in the field of virtual reality since 2014, when it bought Oculus for $2 billion. Of course, these efforts became a top priority in 2021, when Facebook changed its name to Meta, with Zuckerberg declaring that the metaverse will be the next chapter of the internet.
