Through a new entry on its official website, Microsoft confirmed that there was a very serious bug in both Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022, which could even lead to the loss of files from the devices of users who were running these operating systems. systems.
The problem:
Going into detail, the issue had to do with file encryption and more specifically with the use of a new data encryption hardware accelerator, which is supported by both various Intel processors and AMD’s upcoming offerings, for aspects of Windows 11 such as BitLocker. Specifically, systems with 10th generation (Ice Lake) and 11th generation ( Tiger Lake & Rocket Lake) Intel processors are affected , as well as systems built with AMD’s upcoming Zen 4 processors , supporting the newer Vector Advanced Encryption Standard.
What seems to have happened is that Microsoft added support for hardware acceleration with the Symcrypt library for computers with those processors, with features like AES-XTS and AES-GCM. However, errors in the implementation resulted in data being written to the storage media containing errors meaning that users’ files were either damaged, lost, or partially corrupted.
How will you avoid it?
The good news is that the problem in question has been solved with the Windows 11 security update released on June 14 , so just make sure you have it installed. Of course, whether you’re using BitLocker encryption or not, it’s generally recommended that you use the latest version of the operating system and don’t put off security updates too much.
For the record, it is worth mentioning that Microsoft’s original solution had made the performance on the systems in question for the specific processes up to two times slower, but this issue was also resolved with the recent security update released on July 12.
