Warner scrapped The Shining prequel because Doctor Sleep underperformed at the box office
Mike Flanagan explains why
In the spotlight came a news that states that Warner Bros. “closed the door” on The Shining prequel and there’s a reason for that. In particular, according to the director, Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, The Haunting of House Hill), the production company did not proceed with a prequel of the legendary film, because the 2019 Doctor Sleep did not do well at the box office.
Flanagan stated this following a question from a fan and said among other things that he was very close to making the prequel, but ultimately it did not go ahead due to Doctor Sleep. Let us remind you that Doctor Sleep was also based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King that we saw in 2013.
Check out Flanagan’s tweets with a fan about the would-be prequel below:
In 2019, Doctor Sleep didn’t win over critics – despite featuring Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and other big Hollywood stars. Upon its release, it hit 59 on Metacritic, while grossing $72,381,712. Thus, it seems that it was not enough to grow the cinematic universe of The Shining even more.
