The Witcher: Is Henry Cavill returning as Geralt or not after being fired from DC?
Netflix is clarifying the matter after the latest developments
Henry Cavill ‘s dismissal from the role of Superman and DC has given fans of The Witcher series some hope for his return.
Recall that Cavill announced his departure from the series, as Netflix already had his replacement ready, which will be Liam Harmsworth, who will play Geralt of Rivia from the 4th season of The Witcher .
Upon hearing that Cavill will no longer be Superman, several fans trended Liam Hemsworth’s name on Twitter asking for Cavill’s return to the Netflix series, as they thought that his duties as Superman were the reason for his departure.
But Deadline’s report puts an end to the possibility of his return as Geralt in the Netflix show, as it states that the divorce was mutual and that it was Henry Cavill’s choice. In short, Henry Cavill is not going to return to Netflix’s The Witcher and so you will see him for the last time in the upcoming 3rd season. So fans will have to say goodbye to the two iconic pop culture characters that Cavill played, despite efforts and online campaigns to bring him back.
In fact, he says that the 39-year-old star has moved on and that he is already preparing several projects that will be the next stages of his career. One of these will be Amazon ‘s Warhammer 40K series in which he will star and executive produce.
Cavill out of DC
Cavill, upon learning of his dismissal, made a related statement on Instagram saying, among other things:
I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and the news is sad. Ultimately, I won’t be coming back as Superman. Since I was told by the studio to announce my return in October, before they were hired, this news is not the easiest, but such is life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and everyone involved in this the best of luck.
Let’s remember that just at the beginning of October, Henry Cavill had announced that he is coming back strongly as Superman of the DCU, having made a cameo appearance in Black Adam . In fact, there were plans for Man of Steel 2 at Warner Bros. which were canceled by James Gunn and Peter Safran . The new leaders of the revamped DC Studios are gearing up for the next DCU era and have different plans for Superman that don’t include Cavill. But they are preparing a new Superman movie with a different protagonist.
In the wake of the recasting announcement, Liam Hemsworth made the following statement on Netflix’s Tudum:
“As a fan of The Witcher I am thrilled at the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt and I am honored to be handing over the reins and allowing me to take up the swords of the White Wolf for the next chapter of his adventure . Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you’ve given to this beloved character. I may have a big gap to fill, but I’m really excited to enter the world of The Witcher.”
Cavill had stated the following about his departure, as soon as the recasting was officially announced:
My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with monsters and adventures, and sadly, I will be giving up my locket and swords for Season 4. In my place, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will take on the role of the White Wolf. As with the greatest literary characters, I hand over the baton with respect for the time I spent embodying Geralt and excitement to see Liam’s approach to this most fascinating and nuanced man. Liam, good lord, this character has such wonderful depth, enjoy the experience of diving in and seeing what you can find.”
When is The Witcher season 3 coming out?
Henry Cavill’s final stint as Geralt will premiere in summer 2023 on Netflix.
