Netflix puts a stop to those who share their accounts with friends
Feeling the breath of Disney Plus on its neck, Netflix is trying to gain as many subscribers as possible. You see he was not born yesterday and he knows very well when his users lend their accounts right and left. As GammaWire has found , Netflix is testing a new feature that essentially wants to reduce the sharing of accounts between friends, relatives or even acquaintances. Although this practically presses on security issues, so that the user is aware that his account is not being used by a stranger, this is not exactly the case.
For example, if someone logs in to your account without being the owner, they will be asked to verify via email or SMS and if the verification is not done within a time limit, then they will be asked to create their own Netflix account. In particular, he will be greeted with the following message: ” If you are not the owner of this account, you need your own account to continue tracking.”
Of course, this system does not mean that it is impenetrable as -theoretically- the owner will be able to send the verification code to anyone who needs it and use it as before, but this measure definitely aims to combat account sharing. If the feature is widely available and does not stay in the testing phase then it will contradict the claims of Reed Hastings, co-CEO of Netflix, who in 2016 had stated that there is no problem with sharing passwords between users and how not there were plans to take action.
According to analyst firm Parks Associates, code sharing and piracy cost more than $ 9 billion (based on 2019 data) on platforms such as Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. It seems that although in recent years the streaming giants have shown tolerance in this part, this may be starting to change.
