PlayStation: PS5 demand soars even after price hike
New official position from the company
Towards the end of August, Sony made an unusual announcement, officially raising the retail price of the PlayStation 5 in Europe, the UK, Japan, China, Australia, Mexico and Canada , among others .
Specifically, in Greece, the PS5 with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc now costs €549.99 , while if you want to get the PS5 Digital Edition, then you will have to pay €449.99 . Both versions of the console, in other words, got a €50 increase from their original price. As it seems, however, this did not particularly affect their sales, since the new generation console continues to be in demand.
More specifically, in the context of the disclosure of Sony’s financial results for the most recent quarter, which ended in September 2022, the company’s Chief Financial Officer stated that no impact on PS5 demand has yet been observed . In particular, in response to an investor’s question, Hiroki Totoki specifically stated:
In terms of hardware, I can’t give specific numbers, but as I mentioned in my speech, the production of the second quarter has already reached 6.5 million, which we want to use as stock for the sales that will be made at the end of the year . I think there is a lot of expectation here.
And in terms of the impact of the PlayStation 5 price hike, so far, we haven’t seen any reduction in demand. But of course, we will have to watch what happens in the market in the future.
For the record, a few hours ago PlayStation announced the Greek price of the PlayStation VR2, along with its release date.
