Research: Greeks have faster internet on mobile phones than at home
New statistics for March 2023
As usual, Ookla, the company that maintains the most popular – by far – Internet access speed testing website, the well-known Speedtest, has put some new data on how things are going globally.
So, according to its Global Index, the average internet speed in Greece for both fixed connections and mobile networks has improved from January to March 2023 , but this does not mean that we have climbed positions in the classification. Specifically, the following phenomenon is observed in our country:
Most Greeks have faster mobile internet than their fixed line at home! Mobile internet in Greece is among the 31 fastest in the world, but in the corresponding list for fixed lines we are much lower. Nicaragua, Egypt, Uzbekistan and Albania are just above us in the global ranking, while at the top of the world is Singapore.

The average speed for fixed internet in Greece in March 2023:
According to the latest data for March 2023, the average access speed for fixed Internet in Greece amounts to 45.41 Mbps for Download and 8.02 Mbps for Upload. The latency amounts to 13 ms.
Compared to 2022, the increase is large. Specifically, in March 2022 the average Internet access speed in Greece amounted to just 36.21 Mbps. It seems, therefore, that more and more people are leaving behind the ADSL connections that for years kept our average close to the 24 Mbps limit. Now most Greeks seem to have at least a VDSL 50 Mbps line, since that’s where the average tends. In fact, you notice an increase even compared to the beginning of the year, since in January 2023, the average for our country was 43.63 Mbps.
The average mobile internet speed in Greece in December 2022:
According to the latest data for March 2023, the average Internet access speed in Greece via mobile networks amounts to 67.54 Mbps for Download and 13.95 Mbps for Upload. The latency amounts to 22 ms.
Compared to 2022, the increase is significant. Specifically, in March 2022 the average Internet access speed in Greece via mobile networks amounted to 59.42 Mbps. As it can be seen, therefore, the networks in our country are becoming more modern in more and more areas, thus helping the rise of the average. In fact, there is an increase even compared to the beginning of the year, since in January 2023, the average for our country was 65.35 Mbps.
How does the internet in Greece compare with the rest of the world?
Regarding Speedtest’s global ranking, Greece is in position 93, maintaining exactly the same position we had in January 2023.

Regarding Speedtest’s global ranking for mobile networks, Greece is doing great and is in position 31. Of course, there is a slight drop, since in January 2023 we “finished” in position 29.
