Square Enix blunder: It forgot something it shouldn’t in its new game!

Oops!

Apparently, Square Enix ‘s new JRPG , Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion , includes assets for which the company does not have the rights to use. Oops!

The development team’s blunder was spotted by Kotaku, which reports that at least three paintings that the player can find in the title’s environments come with a watermark from well-known stock image company, Getty Images.

In case you don’t know, Getty Images watermarks all of its images to prevent unauthorized use. When someone buys the image for legal use, then the watermark is removed. As for Crisis Core, we still don’t know if Square Enix actually just used images they found randomly on the internet, or if they were placeholders that the development team intended to replace at some point and ended up being forgotten there for the final release.

Whatever the answer, it’s certainly a big blunder, especially considering it was made by one of the most recognizable companies in the industry, in its most storied franchise.

Below you can see one of said paintings that includes a watermarked image and confirms that…Getty Images exists in Final Fantasy lore!

For the record, something similar happened this year to another Japanese giant, Capcom. Specifically, the company was caught using a simple stock image from the internet for the Street Fighter 6 logo!
