The next flagships will have ray tracing and 200MP cameras

Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

Qualcomm has revealed its next mobile chipset for 2023 flagships, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 . The new chip is stronger and more energy efficient than the first generation, while incorporating more AI systems.

With the upgraded Hexagon processor and Qualcomm AI Engine, it will offer “ faster natural language processing with multiple translations and advanced AI features in the camera ”.

Architectural changes to AI will deliver four times (x4.35) performance over Gen 1, while AI will deliver a 60% improvement in performance per watt. In the camera, AI will automatically and in real-time enhance both photos and videos, recognizing individual elements such as faces, hair, clothes and sky. The chip will also support new sensors, such as Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL HP3. It is worth noting that this is the first Snapdragon with AV1 codec, supporting 8K HDR playback at 60fps.

In the field of gaming, it will offer real-time hardware accelerated ray tracing , changing the visual experience of games. The Adreno GPU will offer 25% greater performance and 40% greater energy efficiency compared to Gen 1. It will even support the Unreal Engine 5 Metahumans Framework, offering players ” the experience of photorealistic human characters in their games “.

In terms of connectivity, it supports 5G SIMs and WiFi 7 with speeds up to 5.8Gbps. In sound, it will be able to offer spatial audio with dynamic head position detection, 48kHz lossless music streaming and latency up to 48ms.

The first Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones will arrive at the end of the year. Partner companies include ASUS, Honor, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Sharp, Sony, Xiaomi and ZTE.
