Orcas coordinately break the ice to eat a seal – Amazing footage (VIDEO)

Rarely synchronized behavior of killer whales

Orcas are the planet’s top marine predator and they prove it once again in a unique video, displaying extremely rare cooperative and synchronized behavior to catch their prey. The footage, which is part of the BBC documentary Frozen Planet II , shows four orcas attacking a seal. The seal took refuge in a large piece of ice floating in the water.

The orcas, in an extremely rare display of cooperation, swam side by side at high speed under the ice, creating a large wave that broke the large block of ice into many smaller ones. Then the second wave they produced pushed the seal into the water. Finally, they used another hunting tactic in which they blow bubbles to confuse the seal, eventually sinking their teeth into its flesh.

This particular complex cooperative tactic has been observed in only 100 orcas on the planet. Enjoy the exclusive video below.
