Sonic Frontiers is the future of the series, says the Sonic Team

Sonic Frontiers puts Sega ‘s favorite blue hedgehog into an open world, scented with the Hyrule we explore in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The new setting of the game transforms the traditional and legendary Sonic into something different and this seems to be what the Sonic Team wants for the franchise.
Now, during the Summer Game Fest Play Days, Takonic Iizuka creative officer of Sonic Team, talked about the title and said the following:
So far we have had 2D side-scrolling gameplay and 3D, a more linear format, where Sonic starts somewhere and ends somewhere. This will be the future of Sonic (meaning Frontiers). We wanted to make something that is really free. Be free and run where you want.
This is what we did with this huge 3D world. We transfer a Sonic with action, in a 3D environment. The passion that was in all this is great. This is the new form of “open zone” that we have created. When we started playing this game, everyone ran from start to finish to test how fast you could “clear” the island from side to side.
We kept trying it because Sonic is such a fast character and if you completed it so fast, the “open zone” format we did would not work. So, we built an island. We ran from one point to another and said: “This is not good. Throw it. Do the biggest. We need to make it bigger. More”.
And so we were constantly testing the size of the island and wondering since we have such a fast character and we had to make this “open zone” a fun playground to play.
Overall, Sonic Frontiers promises a Sonic experience we have never experienced before, with high-speed action in a completely open environment. Thus, players will have the opportunity to fight with powerful enemies as they explore the dense forests, huge waterfalls and vast deserts of the Starfall Islands.
For the time being, the specific release date of the game remains unknown, since all we know officially is that it will come sometime in 2022 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Switch and PC.
